Key Architecture Decisions

Strong authentication, Conditional Access, privileged identity management, access reviews, break-glass procedures and workload identities each address a different risk. A platform team should establish patterns for human administration and application access, reduce permanent privilege and provide evidence of who can change critical infrastructure.
Landing zones are where many security intentions become enforceable. Management groups and subscriptions form authorization boundaries. Azure Policy can require diagnostics, prevent disallowed exposure or configurations and guide delivery toward approved services. Defender capabilities, security monitoring and centralized logging need a clear ownership model so findings are actionable rather than merely collected.
Identity is also fundamental to Azure Virtual Desktop and multi-tenant products. Virtual desktops may expose business systems from a flexible user access layer, so authentication strength, session policies and device conditions matter. Product platforms must distinguish tenant boundaries, operational administration and service-to-service access. Managed identities and carefully scoped roles reduce secret handling and clarify trust paths.
Regulated and sovereign platforms raise the demand for traceability. Administrators, deployment identities, external support paths and access from different locations need deliberate controls and auditable records. Policies and privileged workflows should be engineered consistently through infrastructure as code where possible, while exception handling remains explicit and reviewed.

Common Failure Modes
Identity controls fail in practice when permanent privilege becomes normal, workload credentials are unmanaged, or security signals have no operational owner. Conditional Access and policy configuration alone are insufficient unless revocation, emergency access and investigation processes are also tested.
Platform Security Model
The platform should separate human administration from workload authentication. Human administrators need defined privileged roles, eligibility and approval practices, strong authentication and monitored emergency access. Workloads should use managed identities or other governed service identities with narrowly scoped permissions rather than unmanaged credentials.
Security operations depend on usable signals. Diagnostic settings, activity logs, identity sign-in information, policy compliance and alert handling need destinations and owners. A control that exists in a design document but cannot be investigated during an incident does not provide reliable operational assurance.
For multi-tenant or regulated products, architects should explicitly document tenant isolation assumptions, deployment identities, administrative routes, key management and exception handling. Microsoft Entra ID is a critical foundation, but it must be combined with resource authorization, network boundaries, data controls and deployment governance.
Measures of Success
Identity architecture is effective when privileged access is limited and reviewed, application permissions are understood, sign-in and policy outcomes are investigated consistently and critical access can be revoked through tested procedures. These measures turn identity controls from configuration settings into an accountable security capability.
